Making the Left-Center-Right 3-Letter Monogram Fonts

I'm delighted to share this with you!  I've been thinking about it for months and worried it was far too complicated.  But when I sat down and applied the KISS theory to it, things fell into place!

You may find something different online and you can adjust your monogram to whatever format suits you.  A classic monogram font is created using your

first name initial on the left,
middle name initial on the right and the
last name initial larger in the middle

This is what mine looks like by combining the

Left Flourish Monogram Font (S), the Center Flourish Monogram Font (C) and
the Right Flourish Monogram Font (E).
You will need all three fonts to accomplish this type of monogram.

If you're creating a monogram for a married couple, their last initial goes in the middle (larger), the bride's first initial to the left and the groom's to the right.  For instance (oh, this is tough! Most of my friends kept their maiden names!) ....  When George married Martha, this would have been their monogram (made in the colours of her geraniums!):

To create our 3-Letter Monogram in Silhouette Studio:
You will need the three fonts:

  • Type out the first letter, highlight it and use the drop-down menu to choose the QFD Left Flourish Monogram Font.
  • Separately type out the middle initial, highlight it and choose the QFD Middle Flourish Monogram Font.
  • And lastly type out the right initial, highlight it and choose the QFD Right Flourish Monogram Font.
  • Once you click off these they become objects, so you can align them.
  • Click the middle initial and enlarge it to the size you want.
  • Now move the other two initials closer so the flourishes overlap until you like the look of the monogram.
  • Group all the letters together and enlarge to the size you need.  Of course, add some colour!  All the letters can be the same colour, or they can all be different!
  • You can print them, just like this in a frame of your choice, or weld them together and cut out the detailed 3-Letter Monogram!
  • Warning - it's like eating chips.  It's really hard to stop at one!
Beautiful!  Have fun!

Personalize it with a Monogram

There is nothing like receiving a gift that is personalized just for you.  Monogram fonts are a perfect solution and they are such a fun way to make a gift extra special for someone!  As long as you can print a font that you’ve installed on your computer, you can make some very cool things.

This project uses craft vinyl and an electronic cutting machine.  The list of things you can personalize with vinyl is almost never-ending!  It’s awesome that you can adhere it to non-porous items that will be outdoors getting lots of wear and tear and the detail you can cut is amazing.

We're making a monogrammed tool bucket for your desk today, but you could just as easily use the Pawsome Monogram Font and fill the bucket with puppy treats!

Supplies:

Styletech  Crafts/Tape Technologies Textured Vinyl in Royal Blue
Transfer Tape
Silhouette Cameo (use the code 10off to save 10% at Silhouette.com)
Tin bucket

Instructions:

  1. Install the monogram font on your computer by following the instructions from the font provider. Most fonts will work in any software program, but today we are concentrating on electronic cutting.
  2. Measure the area you want the monogram to cover on the item you are personalizing.
  3. Type the letter you wish to use in your electronic cutting machine software and size it to match the area you just measured. You can try printing out a test monogram on paper to check the size.
  4. Chose a vinyl that will contrast well with your object. Follow the vinyl cutting instructions specific to your electronic cutting machine.
  5. Weed out all the excess vinyl in parts of the design that you don’t need.
  6. Cover the design with transfer tape, burnish it  then pull the design away from the vinyl release backing.
  7. Place the monogram in position on the item you’re decorating.  Burnish it onto the surface then carefully remove the transfer tape. Do some additional final burnishing on the monogram.
  8. Congratulate yourself! What a fabulous gift!

Personalize a Card with Monogram Fonts

Although Monogram Fonts aren’t designed for creating text, they can be really fun to personalize a card! Many of my monogram fonts start with my basic Italic Capitals which I use for teaching calligraphy and this technique works especially well if the basic letterforms are the same in different fonts. It helps make the fonts interchangeable and easy to read when you mix and match them.
Here is how you can make an awesome card or nameplate!  If you are receiving this as an email update, click here to watch the video on YouTube.

Thanks for watching!  What will you do with your monogram fonts?!
