Make the Freestanding Alphabet and Place Card Letters

Meet the Freestanding Alphabet and Place Card Letters. They're so quick and easy to make!

Ever wish your letters could literally stand out? This project makes it happen! We’re turning plain cardstock into bold, freestanding letters that can double as place cards. Decorate them with pretty papers, spell out inspiring words, or personalize them with names for a party table. With just a few cuts and folds, you’ll have a project that’s quick, fun, and guaranteed to impress.

These clever digital cutting projects let you create giant letters that actually stand up on their own! Decorate them in your favourite papers and colours to make eye-catching initials, monograms, or even spell out a whole word across a shelf or party table.

Want to take it up a notch? Add the Print and Cut panel to change your letter into a place card variation. It's a personalized name card that’s as pretty as it is practical. Perfect for weddings, showers, dinner parties, or even just jazzing up your desk with a word that inspires you (like Faith, Joy, or Cake—we don’t judge).

Whether you use them for decor, parties, or everyday fun, these freestanding letters are a delightful way to mix personalization with creativity.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to cut, fold, and decorate your letter so it can stand tall on its own or work as a stylish name card. It’s a quick, creative project that adds a personal touch to any occasion.

And if you make them large enough, you can add a flameless tealight inside.

Advanced Accordion Card Blanks

I've done all the measuring for you! YAY! Just choose great paper, cut on your machine and assemble the layers (if needed or wanted!).  You can stamp on the panels, letter on the base accordion, and add drawings or photos to these designs with ease.

  • The Stepped Fold Accordion - Card Blank has panels that increase in size. Very cool! Tons of opportunities for stunning colour combinations.

  • The Panel Insert Accordion - Card Blank comes with insert panels which include onlay panels.  This card is great if you like doing your artwork on separate pieces of paper, but love to keep them together. I've added a belly band which works to stop the accordion from springing open when filled.

  •  The Interlocking Accordion - Card Blank is a stunning card, which includes decorative panels if you wish to use them. Make sure you watch the assembly video for tips and tricks.

  • The Diamond Fold Accordion - Card Blank also includes decorative panels if you wish to use them. There are so many creative possibilities here!

  •  There is a simple Boxed Accordion - Card Blank that includes decorative panels if you wish to use them. It's a fun surprise for the person opening the box! Use the tabbed accordion strip to to add even more length to your accordion.

Basic Accordion Card Blanks

I created these designs to save you loads of time and frustration!  No measuring needed, just cut on your machine and assemble the layers (if needed or wanted!).  The hardest part will be choosing the papers!  You can stamp on the panels, letter on the base accordion, and add drawings or photos to these designs with ease.

  •  I've made you a Basic Square Accordion Card Blank which includes decorative panels if you wish to use them. Since we're limited by a 12" piece of paper, I've added a tabbed accordion so you can keep adding accordion panels to make your card as long as you want. If you wish to decorate both sides of the accordion, simply double the number of panels you cut!
  • There Basic Rectangle Accordion Card Blank comes with decorative panels, both rectangular and oval.  Cut them all the same, vary them as I've done or don't use any! I've added a tabbed accordion so you can keep adding accordion panels to make your card as long as you want. If you wish to decorate both sides of the accordion, simply double the number of panels you cut! I've also added a belly band which works well when two sections of this accordion are joined.
  •  There is a simple Stepped Accordion Card Blank that includes decorative panels if you wish to use them and there are enough to add to both sides of the accordion. An interesting variation on the basic accordion.
  • There is another stepped accordion, but this one is angled. The Stepped Angled Accordion Card Blank also includes decorative panels if you wish to use them - enough for both sides. I really like this variation!
  • The Tag Accordion Card Blank can be short or long. I've added a tabbed accordion so you can keep adding accordion panels to make your card as long as you want. If you wish to decorate both sides of the accordion, simply double the number of panels you cut!  For fun, add some ribbon to the holes at the top!
